About Gordon

— Experience and Education

In technology, my focus is to develop and enhance money making business objectives with the wise and timely use of electronics, software, programming, internet technologies, vehicles, data analysis, artificial intelligence, and more.

In science, I am trained in chemical and biological laboratory science, and worked with researchers on mobile genetics in disrupting pathogenic rainwater organisms, as well as designing and quantifying pilot-scale chemical reactors. I further specialised in extraction technology, such as extracting catnip oil from the catnip plant, to further use as a safe mosquito repellant.

None of this could be accomplished without grounding in reality, in business. I studied business development, supply chain management, international business, community economic development, sustainability, change management, marketing, and importantly leadership. I also love talking with entrepreneurs and investors.

Data governance is another emerging field of great importance, ensuring the correct data access is given to users, and can technically change when using databases versus data warehouses or data lakes. Data warehouses are more or less a catch-all for data and sorted into structured and unstructured data, and data lakes use advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to do warehousing. Data governance is concerned with the stewardship of ethical and appropriate usage of data.

Data governance knowledge domains I'm trained in include: data architecture, data modelling and design, data storage and operations, data security, data integration and interoperability, documents and content, references and master data, data warehousing and business intelligence, meta-data, and data quality.

Data governance has some things in common with data analysis and AI tasks, such as Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL), data quality, lineage, catalouging, and metrics.

I have been trained in data governance and ethics throughout my post-secondary education, have experienced first how data governance can protect employees, the business, and entrepreneurs, safe guarding trade secrets, sales, and regulatory data.

While I enjoy the technical side of data governance, the theoretical side of ethics, and the implications of regulatory bodies upon data such as privacy and storage location of data laws.

Most of all through, I have Canadian workplace experience and plenty of training in tech and business, so I love getting to know people within an organisation, and understanding how data is created, used, and destroyed within the organisation.

I love Standard Query language (SQL) which is the language of databases. Databases are used almost everywhere, can hold the most secret information on the planet, and good database admins attain knowledge in cybersecurity to ensure database permissions are correct, firewalls block unauthorised access, perhaps writing triggers to ensure another layer of security and data assuredness. Another area of knowledge in databases is where the data is actually stored, as some countries such as Canada have laws and regulations from governing bodies on data location specifics and privacy. Deployment, back-up, redundancies, are also important.

Data analysis includes Extract, Transform, and Load "ETL" which is a time consuming part of the work, but it helps the analyst understand the data, and decide on how to process and understand the data. I use tools such as Salesforce Tableau, Apache Spark/DataBricks, and Python programming language with it's various addon packages. Modern data analysis is all about data, AI, CRM, and governance, as well as presenting the results as information in a story-telling way.

Software Development is a vast and complex field, which uses skills to design, develop, deploy, monitor, and develop software solutions which are built to sell you a pair of shoes which you cannot try on until after the purchase, or to fix some of today's hardest and most important problems. Programming often refers to the computer language used, how it's coded, how it connects to the database, and so forth. Development often refers the approaches taken to solving the problems, such as a waterfall or step-by-step approach, or one of the many cyclical approaches such as Agile development, which is like developing a bit, then getting a prototype, then improving it compared to what the client expects.

After training as a full software developer, including web development, desktop app development, mobile app development, linux operating systems, server deployments, virtualisation, software design concepts, and much more, I decided to take a new, modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) program at the same college.

This program took me through ETL, advanced python programming, data analysis, batch and real-time systems, cloud services AWS and Azure and how to implement big data and machine learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), processing data from electronic sensors, networking, supervised learning (when you know how to label the data), unsupervised learning (when you don't know what the data is really), neural networks, deep neural networks, and data governance. We used famous AI packages OpenCV, Scikit Learn, Google Tensorflow, and more!

I use WordPress and hold licencing for e-commerce (WooCommerce) compatible themes, plugins for SEO, file sharing, and tons more functionality going well beyond the idea of a simple blog website. No wonder more than 43% of the clearweb internet reportedly uses WordPress. Joomla and SiteCore are also popular.

Sometimes though, the requirements for a fast and bare-bones website may require a hand-coded website from scratch. I also have experience and hold licencing for various template packages which cut development time greatly.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), Search Engine Marketing (SEM), advertisement campaigns, user interface and experience design (UI/UX), copywriting, sales funnels, and E-mail campaigns.

I use world famous Adobe Creative Cloud apps as well as open-source packages (GIMP, Olive, etc.) to create logos, make graphics, tweak and clean audio as well as video.

It all started as an interest in aviation and meeting a friend who is a strong aviation enthusiast. I loved capturing video of sports matches, as well as video of the Toronto urban landscape.

In Canada, being a Canadian Drone Pilot is not easy, as flying anything weighing over 250 grams requires a drone pilot licence, which is codified into law using the densly packed and infamous "CARS" aviation regulations. Overseen by several regulatory bodies, and in addition has some very interesting technical challenges. Drones quickly become technological masterpieces when using non-user friendly brands of drones.

I fly the high-quality "DJI" brand of videography drones, and in drone simulation software I fly all kinds of racing types of drones, for fun.

International Business Development can be challenging; cross-border customs, global logistics, changing financial markets, business may have to be conducted in a culture, multiple offices, and more. I have been trained in trade research and market analysis, using technology in business, project management, global business, supply chain, customs, international law, accounting, banking, and finance, marketing, advertising, and sustainability and ethics. All of this was brought together into a comprehensive international business plan, making a strong case for exporting Canadian lighting products to Ireland. This was the work of a dynamic and focused group of 4 people over an 8-month span.

I have been trained in managing global supply chains, including logistics, warehousing, demand planning, inventory management, risk management, risk management, business planning, purchasing and supplier management, project management, operations management, customs and regulations, ethics, international accounting, law, and finance. Supply Chain Management is an integrated approach to business management, and I have specialised training such as Risk Mitigation for Supply Chain and Marketing for Supply Chain.

My first job was in education, as an Internet and Technology educator working under contract with Industry Canada (now Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada). I taught small business owners and members of the local community about the then-new technology called the Internet. While it was more primitive then, it was still fun to introduce literacy in technology and get people excited about technology. The contract was renewed 3 times on continued merit.

After this I finished secondary school and continued to post-secondary, where between different colleges and universities, I attended over 100 post-secondary courses.

In software development, I use a world-leading Learning Management System (LMS) called "Moodle" which I can setup, adminstrate, and develop courses.

Physics, chemistry, and biology always interested me in school, but in high school I found the curriculum to be lack luster and boring. I knew that in post-secondary it became a lot more interesting and had a lot less of the classical introductory topics.

My initial interest in science was how does the world work on sub-atomic, atomic, nanoscale, microscale, and macroscale all at once, in the same time and place.

However, not only did I learn about that, I learned about skills such as group work, deadlines, what is expected at different levels of education, how to present, how to stick with a project through adversity, and how to effectively fund post-secondary education.

In science I learned analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, environmental chemistry, biology, laboratory practices, and much, much more.

I worked in a chemical reactor lab alongside a prominent Ph.D. student (now post-doctorate graduate) to understand and quantify a pilot-scale chemical reactor. I also worked in a genetics laboratory finding a way to genetically disrupt a water-borne pathogen commonly found in African rain water.

I specialised in Chemical Extraction technology, extracting the essential oils out of a catnip plant, to produce a catnip oil spray.
